Delta Girl's Soccer Team TAKES ACTION
|
This Fall, I had the privilege of coaching the girls soccer team at my alma mater, Delta high school. As everyone became more acquainted with me throughout the season, the girls were occasionally exposed to glimpses of my work with L.A.C.E.S., some of them even volunteering at our Pray the Devil Back to Hell showings. It was so humbling to have their support, to see their desire to invest in something so close to my heart. Unknown to me, that desire to invest went a step further for 2 of our seniors, Jessica Hatcher and Kendi Zvokel.
Back in September, the girls started discussing a way to host a “Delta Olympics” of sorts, and were contemplating which organization they could donate the proceeds. “We were thinking of other charities to give to that we usually do and then L.A.C.E.S popped into our heads. We were hesitant because we weren't sure if the school would go for it since it is a Christian based organization, but we decided to jump on it anyways,” says Hatcher.
After approval was given by the athletic director and principal the planning was underway. Hatcher and Zvokel had shirts made to sell and partnered with several sponsors including Shellshotz Photography, Dairy Dream, Muncie Baseball and Delta Girls Soccer. The Delta Olympics took place October 26th - 30th and featured a Dodge Ball tournament and a Volleyball tournament. At the end of the event, a grand total of $807 dollars was raised, all still unknown to me. The girls decided to wait until the Fall Sports Athletic Banquet on November 3rd to surprise me with the presentation of the check. Noting on the experience of it all, Zvokel said, “It was really stressful and a lot of work but it was definitely worth it.” Adding to that feeling, Hatcher commented, “We just wanted to give back to her for making soccer so great and for all of her time she took to coach us, just because she wanted to”
Hatcher reflected saying “There wasn’t one practice that I don’t remember her saying something about Liberia or L.A.C.E.S. It was evident how much of her heart and time she put into this. I think it was just so crazy that she randomly decided to coach, and with it being Kendi and my first year playing, it was important that her and I had a coach that would work with us, encourage us, and not give up...Seren was just that.”
I was so excited that these girls would take this kind of initiative and bless LACES with their efforts. They are remarkable individuals, and I was blessed to be their coach.
